There are some birthdays that deserve more than a few phone photos. Turning 40 is a pretty big milestone, and when the birthday boy is a videographer himself, you know there are going to be plenty of cameras around.
This time, though, it wasn't him behind the camera.
I was there to photograph the 40th birthday of a good friend of mine, the man behind Empire Cinematic, and the theme for the night was all about Michael Jackson.
With the outfits, lighting and atmosphere, it felt like the perfect opportunity to shoot the whole evening on 35mm film.
There were some impressive moves, some questionable ones and, naturally, a few attempts at the moonwalk!
But that's exactly what made the night so much fun to photograph.
I wasn't looking to create a collection of perfectly posed portraits. I wanted to capture the atmosphere as it actually felt.
For this particular party, I loaded up with CineStill 800T.
It turned out to be a really good choice for the look I wanted from the night.
The blacks, reds, metallics and darker tones in the clothing paired nicely with the look of CineStill 800T. The red glow added another layer to the photographs and helped give the images a more nostalgic, cinematic feel.
