There’s something about a destination Indian wedding that feels lighter from the very beginning. Maybe it’s the open air, the unfamiliar scenery, or the way everyone arrives already in celebration mode. This Haldi ceremony had exactly that energy, joyful, relaxed, and beautifully alive.
Set outdoors against a backdrop of soft skies, warm sunlight and the himalayan mountain line, this Haldi ceremony destination wedding was a celebration of colour, texture, and togetherness. Every detail, from the floral decor to the playful turmeric rituals, felt effortless and full of personality.
Why Haldi Ceremonies Are Perfect for Film Photography
Haldi ceremonies are naturally expressive, bright turmeric, floral yellows, flowing fabrics, and constant movement. Shooting this celebration on analogue film photography allowed those colours to feel soft, true, and timeless.
Using Portra 400 in both 35mm and medium format, the warmth of the turmeric and marigolds translated into gentle, glowing tones. Skin tones stayed natural even under strong daylight, and the grain added depth that digital simply can’t replicate.
For quieter moments between the laughter, I used Ilford HP5 black and white film. These frames stripped everything back to expression and emotion, smiles, glances, hands mid-gesture, giving the gallery a beautiful balance between vibrant colour and timeless monochrome.
Outdoor Decor That Let the Moment Shine
The ceremony space was designed with intention but never felt staged. Soft draping moved in the breeze, marigold garlands added texture, and low seating created an intimate circle around the couple.
Because the Haldi took place outdoors, natural light became part of the design. Sunlight filtered through fabric and florals, creating shifting highlights and shadows that made every frame feel dynamic and alive. This is where destination wedding photography truly shines, nature becomes part of the atmosphere.
The Joy of Haldi Games
One of the most memorable parts of the day was the laughter. Friends and family didn’t just watch, they joined in. Playful Haldi games turned the ceremony into a shared experience filled with teasing, turmeric-covered hands, and bursts of spontaneous joy.
Photographing this on 35mm film allowed me to move freely and stay close to the action, capturing quick expressions and unexpected moments. The slight unpredictability of film mirrors the energy of Haldi itself, unfiltered, emotional, and real.
A Balance of Medium Format & 35mm
Shooting on both medium format and 35mm film created a varied visual rhythm.
Medium format frames slowed everything down. These images feel considered and cinematic, perfect for portraits of the couple surrounded by soft colour and gentle light.
35mm brought movement and intimacy. It captured the in-between moments: turmeric mid-air, shared glances, hands reaching in, laughter that couldn’t be posed.
Together, they told the story of the Haldi not as a staged event, but as it truly unfolded.
A Timeless Way to Remember a Joyful Beginning
Haldi marks the joyful start of the wedding celebrations, and photographing it on film preserved that feeling in a way that feels enduring rather than trendy. The tones are soft, the grain adds texture, and the moments feel lived-in, not over-edited.
This destination Haldi ceremony photographed on analogue film became more than a colourful event, it became a collection of memories that feel warm, nostalgic, and full of life.
Because in the end, the beauty of Haldi isn’t just in how it looks. It’s in how it feels, and film has a way of holding onto that feeling forever.
