Nav and Sanjay’s pre wedding shoot at Ellenborough Park was the perfect reminder that great photography isn’t about perfect conditions, it’s about adapting, creating, and making the most of every moment.
On the drive up, the weather looked promising. Sunshine, blue skies… classic optimism. But as soon as we arrived at Ellenborough Park, the British weather did what it does best, the rain came down properly.
As a wedding photographer, flexibility is everything. Pre wedding shoots, engagement sessions, and wedding days rarely go exactly to plan, and being able to adapt quickly is a huge part of creating beautiful images regardless of the conditions.
We originally had permission to photograph around the outdoor grounds of Ellenborough Park, which are stunning for pre wedding photography. However, there was an event happening at the venue, which meant we had limited access indoors and couldn’t use some of their larger rooms.
Instead, we worked with what we did have, a beautiful staircase and a smaller room with dark walls and ceilings. The couple had chosen black outfits for the shoot, which worked perfectly with the moody interior and gave the images a stylish, editorial feel.
I always bring a range of lighting and modifiers to every shoot, even if I’m planning to use only natural light. You never know what the space will look like or what creative direction the day might take, and it’s always better to have more options than not enough.
Starting Slow and Natural
We began on the staircase with some relaxed couple portraits. Most couples aren’t used to being photographed professionally, so I always start slowly and keep things calm. The first few frames are less about perfection and more about helping the couple settle in, soft smiles, quiet laughter, simple movement.
As Nav and Sanjay relaxed, their natural chemistry started to show. Those early, gentle moments often end up being some of the most meaningful.
After the staircase, we moved into the darker room and created something a bit more dramatic. Using controlled lighting, we shot a series of portraits on a table with overhead light, creating bold, stylish images that felt completely different from the soft staircase photos.
These ended up being some of the standout shots from the session, proof that limitations in space can often push creativity further.
One of my favourite parts of the shoot was seeing Sanjay’s confidence grow. He started off a little shy in front of the camera, which is completely normal, but as the session went on his personality really came through. By the end, he was fully enjoying the experience and it shows in the photos.
Just as we wrapped up indoors, the rain finally stopped. The sky stayed overcast, but we were grateful to step outside without getting soaked.
We took advantage of the Ellenborough Park grounds for some natural, relaxed images. I stepped back and let Nav and Sanjay just be themselves. Nav’s bubbly personality really shone here, and those candid, in-between moments brought a beautiful balance to the more editorial indoor portraits.
Pre wedding shoots like this are a perfect example of why experience matters in wedding and engagement photography. Weather changes, locations shift, plans adapt but with the right approach, every situation can lead to something unique and memorable.
If you’re planning a pre wedding shoot at Ellenborough Park or looking for natural, creative pre wedding photography anywhere in the UK, embracing the unexpected can often lead to the most meaningful images of all.
